Attacks on the students from the Madrasah School

Attacks on the students from the Madrasah School

Under the direction of Elder Woo and President Lai, the Public Affairs Council issued a letter to Jamiyah Singapore, the largest private Muslim organization in Singapore, in response to the unprovoked attacks on 3 girls of the madrasah school, supposedly for their religious beliefs. Religious bigotry has no place in our society, certainly not in our LDS way of life. The Lord's way to peace is through love, not violence.

Dr Mohd Hasbi Abu Bakar, President, Jamiyah Singapore

Dr Mohd Hasbi Abu Bakar,

Dear Dr Hasbi:

Salaam Alaikum. Peace be unto you.

Like most Singaporeans, we read with despair the attacks on the 3 students on their way to a local madrasah school. There is no place for religious bigotry or resentment in our Singapore, a country that prides itself as 'one united people, regardless of race, language or religion'.

We, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, do not condone these attacks and stand unequivocally with our government and the general public in condemning them for what they are - unnecessary and cowardly attacks on young, innocent students supposedly for their religious beliefs. We believe in the principle of religious liberty and that we all should be free to practice whatever religions available in Singapore, even if those religious views and practices differ from those of ours.

Please help convey our stance to the Muslim community in general and to your members in particular.

This incident reinforces our commitment and desire to partner with Jamiyah - along with any and all the other religious groups in Singapore -  and continue to promote inter-racial and religious harmony in Singapore in order 'to build a democratic society based on justice and equality so as to achieve happiness, prosprerity and progress for our nation'.

Sincerely,

Elder Leonard Woo
President Stephen Lai
Eric Woon
For and on behalf of the Singapore Public Affairs Council of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
