Feed My Sheep
Aug 6, 2011
As a follow-up activity for the annual Youth Conference, young men and young women of the Singapore Stake embarked on a community service project on Saturday morning, August 6, 2011. The excitement of being with friends paved the way for a wonderful journey that led these energetic youths to experience a different dimension of “Feed My Sheep”.
The Red Cross Home for the Disabled was the destination and the tasks at hand were to feed the residents and to entertain them. After an introduction by staff nurse, Mdm Lee Kwee Luang, the youths (numbered around 40) took a tour to meet all the beneficiaries at Singapore’s only residential home for the severely disabled.
Out of the 92 residents, several with severe and multiple disabilities had to be under intensive care while many were also completely dependent when it came to meal time. It was an eye-opening experience for many of the youths to see a simple task being a major challenge for the beneficiaries. Sister Mei Ling from Toa Payoh Ward took the lead and began feeding a disabled resident who is also blind. The youth watched intently as she demonstrated some essential steps in feeding and soon, with caution and some trepidation, they picked up the bowls and spoons to join in the loving work of “feeding the Lord’s sheep”.
After meal time, the youths presented a few musical numbers as entertainment to bring some cheers into the home.
It was indeed a morning well-spent. The youths left with hearts full of gratitude and love.
