To commemorate Racial Harmony Day (Note 1), the Sengkang Central Racial and Religious Harmony Circle organised a special community event on July 23, 2023. The event was open to all and showcased stage performances by different community groups, booths by various religious organisations and favourite local food stalls. It was a fun and lively afternoon with almost 1000 visitors to the event.
Held at the newly constructed Sengkang Grand Mall, the Compassvale Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Singapore had the opportunity to display and share more about our family history and emergency preparedness initiatives. Together with other members of the Circle, the Church was allocated a booth to share general initiatives or knowledge that would be useful to the community. Other religious organisations that participated include Al Mawaddah Mosque, Arulmigu Velmurugan Gnanamuneeswarar Temple and Pu Yi Buddhist Temple.
At the event, Sister Ann Tan, accompanied by Brother Benjamin Huang of the Singapore Young Single Adults (YSA) Ward also lent their talents to perform classic Singaporean melodies including Bunga Sayang, Dayung Sampan medley and Home to the delight of the audience.
Sister LaVon Lew, National Communications Director of the Singapore Stake, commented that this was a unique opportunity to reach out in person to so many members of our community. “We hope to raise greater awareness of these two initiatives that would strengthen the lives of all, regardless of faith or race. We had a great afternoon sharing and feeling part of the Sengkang Central family,” she said.
Note 1 - Racial Harmony Day is an annual event held on 21 July to commemorate the communal riots of 1964 and remind the general public about the importance of maintaining racial and religious harmony in Singapore’s multicultural and multi-ethnic society.
