History

History

Mother’s Day as we know it, as the second Sunday in May, traces its roots to a Resolution signed by United States President Woodrow Wilson, 100 years ago, on 8 May 1914.

This day of recognition received this government mark of approval through the efforts of Anna Jarvis. Like many before her, Anna understood the special calling of a mother, and how profound a mother’s influence and love can be through generations.

On 8 May this year, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints launched a Mother’s Day initiative to celebrate the divine calling of mothers and women around the world. Elder David F. Evans, executive director of the Missionary Department says “Because motherhood is the ‘highest, holiest service … given to mankind,’ we express deep gratitude and respect to mothers everywhere and reaffirm our belief that the role of mothers in nurturing and caring for their families is a divinely appointed and holy assignment.”

A new video titled ‘It Was Mom’ depicts all that a mother does in the lives of her children and emphasizes the crucial role mothers play in God’s plan. It is supported through social media channels with the hashtag #ItWasMom.

The website dedicated to this initiative is http://motherhood.mormon.org/ and is well worth a visit.

Singapore thoughts

Singapore thoughts

We asked a few Singaporeans for a few words on what comes to mind when they think of their mothers. The answers came quickly…

‘With my mother’s support, I have become who I am today (spiritually, physically, emotionally, intellectually); her amazing support (from homemaking, to providing words of encouragement and praise in good times, words of wisdom and advice in not-so-good times, plus always a reminder to turn to God) is what I think she has done most for me.  Thank God for mothers!’ – Su Min Tan

‘Two words come to my mind when I think of a mother; that is love and sacrifice. A love that knows no end that leads a mother to sacrifice anything for her child. A mother loves us and we must love her too.’ – Daniel Soh

‘My mum has given everything for her 11 children. We had very little to live on when we were younger; I remember mum working at the shipyard from 5:30 am until the evening. She continued working once she got home. With all she had to do every day, I never heard her complain about how hard her life was. She has been a great example of endurance and unconditional love to each one of us. I love her and miss her very much.’  – Christina Peh

To all mothers everywhere – thank you. We salute you. We thank God for you.
